Gates Chili Middle School was established in the early 1960s in response to the district’s rapidly growing student population following the centralization of several local school districts in 1956. After the opening of the junior-senior high school in 1958, continued enrollment growth led to the construction of a dedicated middle school building, which opened in 1963 to serve students in grades 6–8. This expansion helped relieve overcrowding in elementary schools and the high school.
As enrollment continued to climb throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the middle school underwent additions to accommodate more students. Today, Gates Chili Middle School remains the district’s sole middle-level building, serving approximately 900 students and continuing a proud tradition of supporting the academic and personal development of young adolescents.
